I have a hard-back book fetish. Kindle? Heck no. Give me a hardcover and a creamy page with Bookman font. Yum. The way the dust-jacket bubbles occasionally, makes my fingers holding it dance a happy jig. And, then of course, there’s the smell…you bookies out there know exactly what I’m talking about. 😀
I just finished The End of Men: And the Rise of Women by Hanna Rosin, for my book review – visit here. I love sociology, quite an addict really. This book delves into the cultural trend of females dominating the work-force and the ramification on home life, romance and the global workforce.
As I assiduously study Timothy Keller’s Every Good Endeavor, I am refreshed with every paragraph. If you struggle with feeling like your work has meaning or purpose, this is the book for you. Recover the idea that work is a “vocation” or calling, “a contribution to the good of all and not merely…a means to one’s own advancement,” to one’s self-fulfillment and power.”
Against Fairness, an insightful perspective on how our desire to make things “fair” for everyone has crippled the desire to excel. It’s affected our schools and society at large (“We are the 99%!! ” ). Witty and playful anecdotes, backed with hard serious fact. He argues we’d all be better off if we favored a bit of favoritism.
Thanks so much for these recs – all topics that really interest me. I must confess I do a lot of Kindle reading for the budget-factor (basically all classic literature is 100% free on these babies.)
As does my family, quite addicted to the Kindle they are 😉 Nothing wrong with it, especially if it makes reading that much more attainable!
