Some will say the head is sacred. Never cut into the top of the head. I disagree. I think a good head shot is not about how much of the forehead is in or out- rather its whether you can capture the personality or not.
A fellow photographer and dear friend calls it how “honest” the photos are. Do they portray the person?
I often muse over the fact that we so often photograph people outside of their normal environment. Why can’t we leave a CEO at his desk and photograph them? Why can’t we shoot a nurse in their scrubs?
Something I’ve been thinking on. Re-visiting notes from Rodney Smith, and wondering how I can improve. I certainly don’t have this all figured out. No indeed. Just beginning in fact.
Yes, just beginning.
Would you recommend his workshop?
It is interesting how headshots are taken out of context, so to speak. I always think those photos look so stiff and awkward.
Yes and no. Don’t go expecting a lot of practicals. He focuses more on YOU as the photographer. Very insightful gift of perception into who people are. He will look at your photos and tell exactly what’s going on in YOU. Whether or not all of his assessments are correct, he is a very creative and unique photographer and that rubs off. ;P
